ABSTRACT: Incidences of Bacterial Heamorrhagic Septicaemia were recorded during the months of February, March, April and May, 2004 from Lower lake, Bhopal, India. A total of 1,283 fishes were screened. Only two species namely Cyprinus carpio and Ompok bimaculatus were found infected with BHS. The infected fishes exhibited the symptoms such as reddening and haemorrhages in skin, erection of scales, swollen vent, distended abdomen and frayed fins. The intestine was filled with thin yellowish fluid and its inner lining was beset with numerous small whitish blisters. Bacteriological examination revealed the occurrence of four types of bacteria from skin lesions/haemorrhages and internal organs viz., liver, kidney, spleen and gills. The bacteria isolated were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila, A. sobria, A. caviae and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Out of four bacteria, A. hydrophila was found to be highly pathogenic while A.sobria is moderate pathogenic and A.caviae and P.fluorescens are observed to be less pathogenic in nature.
