ABSTRACT:
The extraction and application of natural dyes from Afara (Terminalia superba), Albizzia (Albizzi juliblizzin) and Ume (Aucoumea klainena) on cotton and acrylic fibres are described. The extraction was performed, using ethanol as solvent. The dye extracts were applied to textile fibres as direct dyes and also in the presence of mordants. The results of the wet-fastness properties indicates that the dye extracts have affinity for cotton and acrylic fibres with higher exhaustion on the later them on the former. The light-fastness of the dye extracts from Albizzia is, however, lower than that of Afara on cotton fabric. The dye extracts were characterized, using IR, UV-Visible, 'H NMR and 13C NMRanalyses. The very high1HNMR and 13C NMR absorptions of the dye extracts from Afara and Albizzia suggests the possibility of their use for colouring petroleum products such as petrol.
