ABSTRACT: The study reported here was based on the retrospective study of the pattern of illness as recorded for in – patients of the Ekiti State Specialist Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, between 1999 – 2001 (males) and 1999 – 2000 (females). The age range of the patients was 11-100 years with males constituting a total of 1152 (57.14%) and females of 864 (42.86%), total being 2016. The results showed that among the males the individual diseases occupied the following positions: plasmodiasis (196) > tuberculosis (165) > hypertension (138) > enteric fever (137) > diabetes mellitus (114) among the sixteen diseases identified, in females the pattern was: plasmodiasis (208) > enteric fever (113) > hypertension (111) > tuberculosis. In the classification of the diseases into categories (for both sexes), the pattern of illness was: circulatory (897) > digestive (384) > infectious (308) > respiratory (218) > others (209). From these results it is suggested that Nigerians should watch their life - style very seriously and should also always endeavour to keep a clean environment.
