ABSTRACT:

Fatty acid composition of petroleum ether (40-60°C) extracted oil from mature seeds and surface hydrocarbon from the leaves of Emblica officinalis have been analyzed by GC studies. The fatty acids were also identified by GC-MS analyses. Oil content of the seeds was found to be 188.46 g/kg (weight per kg dry materials). The oil of the seeds contained six identified fatty acids, accounting 97.17% of the total fatty acids and four unidentified compounds. The predominant fatty acids were oleic (57.51%), palmitic acids (18.96%), linolenic acid (11.54%) and stearic acid (8.52%). It has been found that seed oil of Emblica officinalis rich in essential fatty acids and consequently the oil may prove its worth as edible oil if considered from nutritional point of view. On the other hand, relative distribution of surface hydrocarbon of leaves shows predominant occurrence of higher odd number hydrocarbons (56.18%) which indicate this plant belongs to higher plant based on taxonomy.
