ABSTRACT: The present study examined the effect of aqueous extract (400 mg/kg body weight) of Avicennia marina leaves in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. After 6 weeks of treatment, the biochemical, histological and immunohistochemical alterations were investigated in kidneys of normal and diabetic rats. Sixty rats were used in this study and were randomly distributed into four groups of 15 each. Rats of group 1 served as controls. Rats of group 2 were injected intraperitoneally (IP) by a single dose (60 mg/kg BW) of freshly prepared STZ. Rats of group 3 were exposed to STZ and supplemented with A.marina leaves extracts. Rats of group 4 were administered A.marina leaves extracts. The fasted animals with blood glucose levels ≥ 250 mg/dl were considered diabetic and used for the experiment. The results showed that the levels of serum glucose, creatinine, urea and uric acid in STZ-induced diabetic rats revealed a significant increase compared to the normal control group.  The histopathological and imunohistochemical investigations showed that A.marina leaves extracts protect the kidney tissues against the damaging effect of hyperglycemia. The results indicated that A.marina leaf extracts showed ameliorative effects on the histopathological and immunohistochemical parameters on kidney of treated diabetic rats and proves its potentials as hypoglycemic agent.
