Dr Mohd Ashraf Rather presently works as Assistant Professor at Division of Fish Genetics and Biotechnology, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology- Kashmir (SKUAST-K). He graduated from College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, and obtained Masters and Doctoral degrees in Fisheries Biotechnology from Division of Genetics and Biotechnology, Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), Mumbai. His area of research interest is Functional Genomics, Nanobiotechnology, Computational and Structural biology of fish protein. His major research contribution is the finding of kisspeptin genes and nano delivery of protein in Indian major carps. Dr Mohd Ashraf Rather is a recipient of various accolades like Prof. K. H. Alikunhi Gold medal from Central Institute of Fisheries Education and Dr Karunasagar Best Post-Graduate Thesis (PhD – Indian category) award from Professional Fisheries Graduates Forum (PFGF). He has received Young Scientist Award in 2017 from the Society of Fisheries and Life Science, College of Fisheries, Mangalore. He has also received Asia-Pacific Alltech Young Scientist Award -2012 (First rank) in Agriculture and Allied Field from the Alltech, USA. He is a recipient of various national and international fellowships like Prince Songkla Fellowship from the Prince Songkla University of Thailand, National Post-Doc Fellowship (NPDF) from Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology- New Delhi, Indian Science Academy Fellowship, Senior Research Fellowship (SRF, First rank) and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF, First rank) from Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi.
He has published more than 40 research publications in both national and international peer-reviewed research journals. In addition, he has published two conference proceedings and one book. He functions as an editorial board member in various international and national research journals. Till date, Dr Mohd Ashraf Rather has received 3 best research paper awards from various international and national institutes and organizations. He has mentored several Masters and Doctoral students pursuing higher studies in Fisheries Biotechnology/Fisheries Science
