ABSTRACT:

Trigeminal neuralgia or ‘tic douloureux’, is a severe spastic, lancinating facial pain due to a disorder of the 5th cranial nerve ( i.e. ) trigeminal nerve. It is characterised by a sudden brief, severe, electric shock-like or stabbing pain typically felt on one side of the face, provoked by light touch, which may occur in varying periods. Several clinicians and investigators have contributed the possible factors that are responsible for trigeminal neuralgia is hypothesis of multifactorial origin. The categorisation of trigeminal neuralgia into typical and atypical forms is based on symptoms and not only on the etiology, thus typical trigeminal neuralgia must not be confused with classic trigeminal neuralgia. Recent advances has been made in treatment options for trigeminal neuralgia such as, cryotherapy, intravenous immunoglobulin and Gamma knife surgery

KEYWORDS: Trigeminal neuralgia; Cryotherapy; Gamma knife surgery; Oxcarbazepine.
